The best ways the CEO can recruit Board Members
|
| |
|
Imagine a CEO running a fast-growing logistics company in Kampala. The trucks are on the road day and night. Competition is fierce, fuel prices swing wildly, and potholes appear overnight. Now picture a board filled with people who have never once sat in traffic on Jinja Road at rush hour. They give polished speeches on “efficiency” but have no clue what it takes to keep a fleet moving when half the trucks are grounded waiting for spares. That is the tragedy of how most boards are recruited, plenty of prestige, little relevance.
The unwritten rule is that board members must be “big names.” Retired permanent secretaries, former bank CEOs, or professional directors who sit on six other boards. They bring titles, but when the company faces an existential crisis, cyber theft, regulatory clampdowns, or a supply chain collapse, they are spectators. A board built for show cannot drive the truck uphill. Read more |

"A CEO who recruits for the journey ahead builds a board that is not a passenger in the truck, but a mechanic, navigator, and risk spotter, helping the driver win the race." |

How the weak board Chairperson kills execution in an organization
|
| |
|
In many companies, the Chairperson of the Board is treated like a village elder at a clan meeting. Everyone waits for their word. When they nod, others clap. When they stay silent, everyone assumes the matter is closed. But unlike a clan, a company needs speed, clarity, and disciplined execution. A weak Chairperson kills this at the root.
Take the case of a mid-sized insurance company. Management designed a bold digital transformation plan to move claims online and cut fraud. The CEO was ready, funding secured, timelines clear. But the Board Chairperson, seeking to avoid offending older directors who distrusted technology, kept postponing the decision. Meetings turned into endless “consultations.” By the time approval came, competitors had already captured the market. Execution failed, not because the strategy was poor, but because the Chairperson feared confrontation. Read more |

Theme: Securing the Future – AI-Driven Security and Risk Management
Boardrooms are now prime targets. Cybercriminals no longer only chase bank tellers or IT departments; they target directors’ emails, compromise board packs (thanks to online portals), and exploit governance blind spots. One breach at the board level can wipe out years of strategy, erode market trust overnight, and invite regulatory wrath.
This is why every serious board must treat cybersecurity not as an IT issue, but as an existential governance responsibility. The chair must insist, and directors must equip themselves with the tools, language, and foresight to lead. The same applies to EXCOs. Executives are the first line of defence, yet most leadership teams are unprepared for a cyber crisis.Read more |
