Why do some board members avoid tough questions?

Recently, I had a rare opportunity to engage with Church leaders from across the country at Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) during an on-campus leadership training. It was a room full of priests, nuns, and lay leaders, men and women deeply committed to mission, but also going through modern leadership challenges that Sunday sermons do not quite prepare one for.

After the presentation, I received an email from one of the participants who said, “Mr Strategy, why do some members avoid tough conversations?” A very good question. What you are not seeing in the boardroom may cost you

It was at a recent leadership retreat that I saw it again. The same silent sabotage that weakens even the most visionary boards. We had just concluded a powerful simulation exercise. Everyone looked energised. But then I asked a simple question: “What blind spot in your boardroom conversation could bring down your institution in two years?” The room went into total silence. Eyes darted. A few nervous chuckles. And then, predictably, the Chairman shifted the conversation to the next agenda item.

That moment captures the real risk: the illusion of alignment.

I have worked with boards across sectors, from regulators to private conglomerates, and the pattern is consistent. Directors are great at approving budgets, debating ESG, and nodding at risk reports. But they rarely interrogate the assumptions behind the numbers. They rarely ask: What are we not seeing? What assumptions about our model, market, and culture are outdated but unchallenged? Read more >>
