Innovation clinics reveal the real disease

In the village, where I grew up, we used to fear climbing the tall mango tree near our home, at the trading centre. Because very few dared to climb, the mango tree had the juiciest fruits. But only the daring would ever enjoy them. Most children stood below, hoping someone else would take the risk. And the few who climbed became legends in our small world.

Years later, I see the same pattern in boardrooms. During a strategy development project at a financial institution, the CEO boldly stated, “We want to become the most innovative bank in the region.” I smile whenever I hear such grand promises. My late grandfather once gave me a stubborn goat to take to the trading centre and sell. On the way, it kept pulling back, getting tangled in bushes, and even entered someone’s banana plantation. It took me hours to move a few kilometres. When I got to the market, an older man laughed and asked, “Are you really leading this goat, or just being dragged along?” That question stuck.

Years later, while advising a manufacturing group in Tanzania, I asked the same thing only I replaced “goat” with “business.” The MD wanted us to design a growth strategy.
