Why phishing works better in January than any other month

The most dangerous cyber incidents we have investigated did not happen during chaos; they happened during calm.

Early January is deceptive. Offices reopen slowly, Decision-makers are on staggered leave, Finance teams are closing December books, IT teams are running on skeleton staff, and everyone assumes the risk passed with the holidays. That assumption is wrong.

In cybersecurity, the start of the year is not a reset. It is a window.

Why attackers love the new year

Phishing thrives on context, and January provides it in abundance. The Password resets, New-year policy updates, revised payroll instructions, and Vendor contract renewals. “Happy New Year” messages from executives. These are not anomalies but expected. That is what makes them exploitable. READ MORE

Evidence tells a story, your report decides which one

Evidence is never silent. But it is rarely clear.

I have sat in rooms where boxes of evidence were stacked to the ceiling: emails, logs, bank statements, CCTV clips, system reports. The investigators were confident. The facts were strong, but the case collapsed.

Not because the evidence was weak but because the story was. Evidence does not speak for itself; it whispers. Your report is the interpreter.

Raw facts do not persuade. Narratives do.

A login timestamp means nothing on its own. A money transfer means nothing on its own. An email attachment means nothing on its own. What matters is sequence, motive, opportunity, and impact.

When reports fail, they read like inventories, not explanations. Lists instead of logic, Findings instead of meaning. The reader is left to connect dots they were never trained to see. READ MORE

Why most strategies collapse in week three

I remember standing in a dusty yard behind a manufacturing plant just after sunrise. Inside the boardroom, the strategy was world-class. Outside, the machines were idle. That is where strategy goes to die, between the boardroom and the shop floor.

Let me be direct with you as Mr. Strategy. I have learned this the hard way across banks, universities, regulators, and family businesses. Strategy is not what you approve. Strategy is what survives contact with Monday morning.

Consider this: a pilot can file the most elegant flight plan. If the fuel gauge is ignored and the weather is dismissed, the plane will still crash. Strategy without execution discipline is aviation by hope. READ MORE
